Depending on how you interpret the relationship between the two main characters, and the ending, you might argue that this is a utopian account, or a dystopian one – what do you think, and why?
For me it seems to be a mixture of both. The red bag, which represents a new technology, enables a positive, serendipitous connection between the two characters which could be viewed as utopian. However, when the technology ‘breaks’ – when the male character’s red bag is torn – communication ceases. Their dependence on technology as their only means of interaction could be viewed as dystopian in the sense that technology creates an artificial connection between them and, ultimately, a barrier.
